Dear Hatikvah Parents,

It is our goal at Hatikvah to assist your child in becoming a lifelong reader.  The summer months provide the perfect opportunity to extend and enrich your child’s reading experiences.  Attached please find a list of suggested books for your child’s reading level.  These books are not required reading, however, the list is to assist you in selecting appropriate reading material for your child to read over the summer months.

The following tips may be helpful for all parents/guardians:

Encourage your child to select the books that interest them.
Whenever possible, children should read 10-20 minutes per day.

Read aloud to your child, even if they are able to read independently.
Take advantage of the summer and read aloud to your child outside.
Set aside a portion of the day as DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) time.
Encourage your child to read magazines, newspapers, even the back of a cereal box!
Ask your child questions about the book; who, what, where, why, when and how.

Review comprehension, vocabulary and listening skills when reading aloud.
Have your child coordinate reading discussions with their friends.

This could be fun on those rainy summer days!

Many of the books on the list are available at the Public Library and will be available at the Barnes & Nobles on Wednesday, May 4, 2011.
